Shelters

Tents and Tarps

A four-season tent is the quickest winter shelter to set up. MOE WITSCHARD

Tents are the simplest, fastest, and most convenient winter shelter. You just need to stamp out a tent platform, let the snow set up for ten or fifteen minutes, erect your shelter, and you are good to go. If you really want to get fancy, you can dig a trench in front of your door so you can sit with your feet dangling down outside to take off your boots.

For winter camping you need a four-season tent with poles and stitching strong enough to withstand a snow load, and enough guy lines to secure the tent firmly to the snow (see sidebar on deadman anchors).

The only downsides to tents are they tend to be heavy and they aren't as warm as a snow shelter (or as quiet in a storm for that matter). But nothing beats the ease of throwing up a tent and crawling into bed.

Tarps can also work well in the winter. You can use a pyramid-style, single-pole tarp like the Black Diamond Megamid, or you can use a roof-shaped tarp strung between two trees. Tarps work best if you build walls around the sides and close in the bottom, making yourself a cozy, protected space to sleep.
